Grant Empowers Grady Spinal Cord Injury Patients
Those who suffer traumatic spinal cord injuries face a variety of challenges in their recovery. But, thanks to a generous grant from the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation, Grady’s team has enhanced its rehabilitation program and purchased needed at-home equipment to help patients live full and productive lives.
In 2024, Grady provided rehabilitation services to approximately 80 spinal cord injury patients. The care team includes 23 therapists, two advanced practice providers and two attending physicians, all of whom have completed the International Spinal Cord Injury Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (INSCSIC) certification course. That training resulted in an improvement in the identification of changes in neurological status, which positively impact patient care and outcomes.
The grant also supported Grady’s Acute Rehabilitation unit, which plays a crucial role in enhancing the continuity of care for spinal cord injury patients. It proves a seamless transition from acute care to rehabilitation and leads to improved outcomes.
The team has also been able to provide essential equipment like wheelchairs, call bell systems and portable suction devices to patients who would not have otherwise received them. These are important tools that minimize complications and hospital readmissions while also empowering patients to reenter their communities with the resources they need to be successful.
